Want dramatic eyes? I have easy step by step eye makeup application techniques you're sure to learn from. Below, I have included lots of images for inspiration & guidance. If you're a beginner at applying makeup or simply don't feel confident about achieving a dramatic eye, I assure you, you will learn something here. You are worthy of this challenge.
These techniques ARE DO-ABLE!
All it takes is a little ambition (which is the reason why you're reading this), motivation (which is why I am cheering you on), the right step by step eye makeup application tips & techniques (all included below) and a little time set aside to practice what you've learned.
Firstly, know that dramatic eyes can be achieved in MANY different ways. It doesn't always necessarily mean wearing the darkest, deepest eye makeup colors. It also doesn't mean applying the most intense shades until your makeup brush wears out. In my opinion, creating a dramatic eye should still sport a classy look.
I will begin the dramatic eyes "how-to" guide with more simple examples and will work my way up to more advanced techniques. This is a great way to build your "eye makeup ideas" repertoire, to increase your level of expertise or to simply add a little variety to your application style.
Regardless of your skin color or ethnic background, you can easily incorporate any of these looks into your makeup routine.
Before you begin any eye makeup application, always remember to prepare your eye area such that you have a good base to work with. Wash your face, apply moisturizer, use an eye primer if desired, foundation, concealer, then powder.
Now, you're ready!
This look sports minimal makeup, yet is still dramatic in a sense that the eye color stands out. You can achieve a dramatic eye makeup look very easily by simply picking colors that will make your eye color POP. By selecting the right eyeshadow colors, it will help enhance your eye color. For detailed information on complimenting your eye color with particular eye makeup shades, see this
1- Select a lighter eyeshadow color that contrasts with your particular eye color. Apply this shade to upper eyelid area and extend into the crease up to the brow bone area. Sweep a this same shade under the lower lashes from outer to inner corners of eyes. Alternatively, apply a similar shade, only slightly darker, to lower lashline.
2- Apply pencil eyeliner in dark brown or black to upper lashline as close to lashes as possible. Line from inner to outer corners.
3- For extra definition, line inner rim of lower lid with same color of eyeliner as seen in photo.
4- Curl lashes and apply 2 coats of black mascara.
We are now moving into more dramatic eyes. This time, these eye makeup looks are accompanied by cat eyes. The cat eye technique consists of extending your eyeliner beyond your natural lash line. In my opinion, dramatic eyes are all about eyeliner. The eyeliner needs to be dark, usually black. Also, it is better to use a liquid or gel eyeliner. For a clean look, apply eyeliner as is. For a more sexy, sultry look, smudge eyeliner and use a dark eyeshadow to blend in. Nevertheless, we'll save that for later. First practice your eyeliner application technique and work on your cat eye. Then, move on to more advanced techniques.
1- Prepare skin as in example #1
2- Apply basecoat eyeshadow in a very light and/or neutral shade. If you feel like being a little daring, use a light pastel color BUT MAKE SURE that you only use the ONE EYESHADOW COLOR. Sweep color on lower lashline.
3- Apply liquid/gel eyeliner to upper eyelid using an angled liner makeup brush. Extend to obtain a cat eye . Smudge if this is the desired effect.
OPTIONAL: Apply a charcoal eyeshadow or pencil eyeliner to outer third of lower lid. Smudge. This simply adds intensity to your dramatic eyes.
4- Apply 2 coats of black mascara. For extra flare, add a few individual false eyelashes to upper outer corner of eye.
Now, we jump into a dramatic eye with even more intensity. This doesn't necessarily mean that it's more complicated, it just involves a few extra makeup application steps and perhaps a darker eyeshadow shade. Keep in mind that you can still only use 1 main eyeshadow color for this look so in many ways, your makeup application technique is still straightforward.
Remember that you can modify this dramatic eye makeup technique according to your particular eye shape. See this eye shapes guide for more info.
1- After preparing face and eye area, apply base color eyeshadow in a light neutral color over entire eye area, from upper eyelid to brow bone. This color should be slightly lighter than your skin tone. This shade creates a balanced eye by evening out skin tone and by creating a perfect working canvas for the next step.
2- Pick a taupe or medium brown shade depending on eye color and skin tone. Apply to outer 2/3 of upper eyelid area and eye crease with a medium eye makeup brush. Sweep this same color under 1/3 of lower eyelid area with smaller makeup brush. BLEND WELL.

3- Apply liquid eyeliner in black to entire upper eyelid area, from inner to outer corner of eye. Extend into a cat eye. Smudge if desired with sponge tip applicator. Smudge color into 1/3 of outer area of lower lid also or simply apply dark intense eyeliner color to this area.
4- Apply false eyelashes , making sure that the longer artificial lashes are at outer corners of eyes.
6- Apply highlighter to brow bone and dot inner corners of eyes too.
7- For a more sexy look, line inner rims of eyes.
