Step by step guide on how to apply eye makeup

Applying eye makeup should not be a challenge. You shouldn't feel as though you have 2 left hands. For this reason, I have created this eye makeup chart that will help guide you through the process. Whether you decide to skip a step or two, this comprehensive guide will help you feel as though makeup isn't just for the pros ;)

Before starting off in step 1, follow my skin care and preparation guide from the navigation bar on the left. Now that your skin is prepped, follow the guide below.

STEP 1:Apply a base eyeshadow (which is the lightest color in your trio palette) all over your eye. Sweep a little under lower eyelid too. Next, as seen in the diagram, line your eye with brown or black liner, upper eyelid OR both upper and lower eyelid. For a day look, either stick to lining upper eyelid only OR line upper and lower with a soft brown.

STEP 2: Next, take a sponge tip applicator, and smudge lightly to soften the line you made.

STEP 3:Take an eyeshadow crease brush and apply medium eyeshadow color (again, reverting back to your trio eyeshadow palette) to outer corner of eye. Blend into base color by moving your brush in a small circular motion so that your medium color gradually disappears into base color. Introduce color in crease also by using a back and forth motion over this area. Again, blend, blend, blend! If you prefer more intensity, use the darkest color from your palette.

SEE the EYE SHAPES page to find the proper application technique for your eye shape.

STEP 4: Now, take another smaller eyeshadow brush and sweep medium color on lower eyelid. Smudge to make sure the line is not too apparent. Again, use a darker color for more intensity. Another option is to use the medium color on lower lid even if you have used the DARKEST shade on upper eye. Experiment to find what you like.

STEP 5: Alright, you're nearly done. Touch up with your eyeliner if needed. For a smokey eye look, line inside rim of lower and/or upper lid. Don't forget to clean off any excess loose eyeshadow below the eye. Lastly, use 2 coats of mascara. Move your mascara brush from side to side and start from the base of eyelashes and move outwards. Curl them beforehand for a more open-eyed look.
